George Martin Maben came to Flagstaff in 1945 on vacation and stayed for the rest of his life. He passed away May 5, 2008.

Born in Marionette, Arizona April 4, 1920 to George Benton and Elizabeth (Horn) Maben, George grew up in Flora Vista, New Mexico. He graduated from Aztec High School and after graduation worked as a cowboy on various ranches in both New Mexico and Arizona. During World War II he joined the Coast Guard and served in the Pacific Theatre on the USS Hunter Liggett. After the war ended, he came to Flagstaff and went to work on the Babbitt ranches with his uncle, Jake Maben. He met his wife, Helen, at Toonerville, her parents’ trading post, and they were married September 10, 1947. Shortly after their marriage, George went to work for Arizona Public Service and worked there for thirty years. He was foreman on line crews which built service to much of Northern Arizona including building lines into The Grand Canyon and Glen Canyon Dam.

George was an avid gardener and loved working on his ranch in Fort Valley. He loved horses and was still helping his sons-in-law with the branding and on round-ups at the age of 82. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed spending time with his grand children, sharing his love of these things.

In September he and his loving wife celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.

Pop is survived by his loving wife, Helen, his children George and Hazel; Janet and Harvey (Howell); David and Sandra; and Lynda and Bill (Howell); eight grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren, Ethel and Mack Phelps (sister and brother-in-law); several nieces, nephews and cousins. His father, mother, brother and sister preceded him in death.
