George M. Hardy, 93, of Jacksonville, IL passed away Sunday, November 27, 2016, at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville.
He was born November 16, 1923 in Jacksonville, the son of Olin P. and Cora Megginson Hardy. He married Phyllis Twyford on May 23, 1953 in Jacksonville and she preceded him in death on May 5, 2012.
He is survived by three sons, Elmer Hardy (wife, Caroline) of Los Alamitos, CA, Roger Hardy (wife, Linda) of Jacksonville, and Glenn Hardy of Jacksonville; five grandchildren, Matthew Hardy (wife, Nancy) of Jacksonville, Breanna Hardy of Manhattan, KS, Brittany Leveque (husband, Andrew) of St. Louis, MO, Arielle Hardy of Davis, CA, and Sterling Hardy of Los Alamitos, CA; a great granddaughter, Annabelle Hardy of Jacksonville; and a sister, Elizabeth Hardy of Jacksonville.
George was a graduate of Jacksonville High School and served overseas with the US Navy during WW II and later during the Korean Conflict. He attended the University of Wisconsin in Madison on the GI Bill and returned to Morgan County to begin his long career in farming.
George was a faithful and devoted life-long member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church and the church’s Goodwill Sunday School Class. He was a former volunteer with the Jacksonville Food Center, a member of the Woodhaven Stroke Support Group along with his wife, and a proud member of the Cass-Morgan Farm Bureau.
Known for his gentle demeanor, kindness and patience, George was devoted to his family, his faith, and his stewardship of the land. As a young farmer he was recognized with the Jaycees Outstanding Young Farmer Award.
He enjoyed many family trips and sightseeing across North America, as well as family gatherings and reunions. As a result of his military service, he participated in PT Boaters organizations and attended numerous PT Boat conventions across the country. George was also an avid stamp and coin collector.
