George Ladue Dewrell of Shalimar, Florida, passed away quietly at home on July 1, 2012. Born in Florala, Alabama, May 15, 1921, George came to this area in 1943 and opened the first dry cleaning plant in the Fort Walton Beach area. A prominent businessman in the area, he founded Bay Furniture Company, Inc. in 1953 which he owned and operated for 36 years. He was also the original owner, developer and manager of Oakmonte Shopping Center on Beal Parkway.
In his life he was not a man to linger or sit still for long. He made sure to always “take care of business”.
George believed in the words of Romans Ch. 12 and strove to meet the expectations that the Apostle Paul had laid out for all Christians in that chapter. He was a living example of a man dedicated to his beliefs and driven by a passion to serve. He never considered himself to be better than any other person.
The beloved father of five sons and a loving grandfather to many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. While his family mourns the loss, they are assured in the knowledge he has found his home in glory. They have pledged to carry on his legacy and honor his name.
He is survived by four of his sons: Don (wife Carol) of Holt, FL. Ray (wife Ann) of Fort Walton Beach, Tom (wife Kathy) of Shalimar, and George (wife Donna), of Fort Walton Beach, FL; daughter-in-law Jeannine Dewrell of Fort Walton Beach, FL; 16 grandchildren: Jill Dickinson, Holly Lovett, Dustin, Duke, Stephanie Owens, Kathy MacDonald, Sharon Patrick, C.J., Bonnie, Stacey Ault, Bobby, Jonathan, Jason, Tracey, Amy, Travis, and George; 24 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren, and his special sister-in-law Grace Pritchard
He was preceded in death by his wife of 72 years, the love of his life, Mildred Adams Dewrell, his son George Franklin (Frank) and his parents, George and Mittie Ann.
