George L. LaVoie of Ormond Beach, FL passed away peacefully at home on October 24, 2017. He was 88. George was the first New Year’s baby born in 1929 in East Boston, MA to the late Norbert and Mabel King LaVoie. Growing up he participated in many sports including baseball, boxing, and semi-pro hockey, but he was best known for his success as quarterback for The Tornadoes, a semi-pro East Boston football team. After earning his degree in Civil Engineering from Northeastern University, he planned and supervised numerous construction projects in and around the Boston area. In 1980 he earned his PGA card and became the Head Professional at Middleton Golf Course, Middleton, MA, where he specialized in teaching golf and custom club fitting. In 1996 he received the New England PGA Merchandiser of the Year award, and upon retirement in 2002 became a Lifetime Honorary Member of the PGA. He spent his retirement years in Ormond Beach, Florida where he continued golfing as a member of Riviera Country Club. Besides golf, George loved family get-togethers, designing additions for his homes, skiing, vacationing in Acapulco and Anguilla, sailing with his brothers, music (anything Sinatra), and reading. George is survived by his loving wife Christine Jackson LaVoie, his children: Mark LaVoie (Lori), Eric LaVoie (Lori Cutter), Carolynne LaVoie Schwartz (Harvey); his grandchildren: Amanda LaVoie, Allison LaVoie Gwilliam (Peter), Darren LaVoie (Tori Coyle), Samantha LaVoie (Cam Jolliffe); his great-grandson Brayden; his brothers: John LaVoie (Anna), Paul LaVoie (Susan), Buddy LaVoie (Barbara), his brother and sister in-laws Fred and Ana Maria Jackson, and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his former wife Jeanne O’Connor LaVoie, his brother Norbert (Bob) LaVoie, and sisters Frances LaVoie, Madeline LaVoie Bernstein (Bob), and Alice LaVoie Bayer (Fran).
