George L. Forrest II, 65, of West Hubbard Ave., died at 11:15 a.m. Thursday (Nov. 13, 2008) in the emergency room of Elkhart General Hospital, apparently of a heart attack.

He was born Feb. 25, 1943, in Sikeston, Mo., to George L. and Odessa (Chandler) Forrest. He married Nannetta J. Wright on July 28, 1979, in Elkhart.

She survives along with four sons, Cory F. (Jeannette) Pulliman and Eugene L. Sutton, both of Elkhart, George L. Forrest III of Denver and Gary Nelson of Council Bluffs, Iowa; six daughters, Loretta L. (Steven) Barnes, Stephanie E. Forrest, Charlotte A. Sutton, Regina (Rod) Roberson and Marlene Jackson, all of Elkhart and Deborah A. Forrest of Denver; and four sisters, Oreatha Davis, Josie Pulliman, Ruth Chavis and Earlean Gary, all of Elkhart.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Mattie Brown, Mercedes Forrest and Wyzella Simmons.

Mr. Forrest worked for many years in the construction and recreational vehicle industry. Most recently he served for nearly 10 years as a supervisor for Mast Construction in Elkhart before retiring in the early 1990s. He was a deacon of Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as a volunteer driving the church van and working for Helping Hands, a group that provided meals and other services to the elderly and the needy.

He was a motivational speaker for Alcoholics Anonymous and spoke frequently throughout the Michiana area. He was an avid gardener and worked with the Amish community, distributing produce through Helping Hands.

In his youth, he was named all-state in football, basketball and track at Thomas Jefferson High School in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
