George J. Makar, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family. He is preceded in death by his father George V Makar Sr. and mother Katherine Bercik Makar.
As a husband and father, he offered generous and loving care for his wife Esther and sons Stephen (wife Beth, deceased), Phillip, Kenneth (wife Dianna) and Daniel; also grandchildren Deanna, David, Audrey and Peter. As an only child, George married into Esther’s large family of six siblings: Geraldine, Tom(wife Linda), Frank (wife Nancy), John (wife Chris), Steve (wife Patty), and Meg. He jokingly would say: “this ensures I’ll be Uncle George to many!
George served in the US Army infantry at Fort Knox Kentucky. He was a professor at Point Park Community College then Dean of Students at the Community College of Beaver County and retired from The University of Akron after 25 years of teaching. As a teacher, he is remembered for his warm smile and friendly handshake. He lived with integrity and inspired many.
Friends and family loved his corny jokes and old time songs. He was someone who was always there to listen and comfortable talking through simple or complex life challenges. To know him is to love him.
Special thanks to Beth at Kindred Hospice for her skilled care amidst the complexities of Parkinson’s and dementia.
