Dr. George “Gyuri” Javor, 90, died of pneumonia at White Plains Hospital on Thursday, December 12, 2019. Born in Budapest, Hungary, on August 19, 1929, Dr. Javor moved to White Plains, New York in 1959 where he resided until his death. He was predeceased by his father József Weisz in 1944, his mother Julia Fleischmann in 1986, and his brother Pista Javor in 2015.

Growing up in Budapest, Dr. Javor discovered a love and talent for chess, which he pursued throughout his life. His childhood was interrupted by the Holocaust. Through grit and perseverance, he survived, as did his mother and two brothers. After the Holocaust, Dr. Javor dedicated his time and life to the medical profession, finding joy and happiness in helping others. He completed his medical studies at Semmelweis University in Budapest and worked as a doctor in Hungary until he escaped during the Hungarian Revolution of 1956, making his way to Vienna and eventually to the United States as a political refugee.

He arrived at Camp Kilmer in New Jersey with his first wife, Ibolya. They rented an apartment in New Rochelle before moving to White Plains in 1959. Ibolya found work at a band-aid factory, while Dr. Javor worked as an assistant to an electrician for four months before he began his internship at White Plains Hospital in late 1957. He completed his certification for his New York State medical license in 1962, while also learning English.

He served his community as a doctor of internal medicine through his private practice in White Plains on Davis Avenue for over 35 years, provided end of life care to terminally ill cancer patients at Calvary Hospital in the Bronx for 40 years, and was part of the team that launched Calvary’s Brooklyn location in Sunset Park in 2001. His first wife, Ibolya, died in 1979 and he married Sasha Davies in 1980. They had two children, Georgina and Andréa, who were his pride and joy.

He was a unique person-someone who combined elegance, discipline, a deep feeling for those he loved and a sly and playful wit. Always in a suit and rarely without a tie, Dr. Javor was someone who made an impression everywhere he went-collecting friends and acquaintances in the neighborhood, at the grocery store and at local businesses throughout White Plains. His generosity, so evident in his relations with human beings-from his family to his patients to strangers on the street-also extended to the animals he loved and served-from the birds he fed in his driveway to the many dogs and cats he adopted throughout his lifetime.

He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Sasha Davies of White Plains, New York; his brother and sister-in-law Peter and Agnes Pertis of Port St. Lucie, Florida; his daughter Georgina Javor, son-in-law Jeff Hughes and granddaughter Amelia Hughes of New York City; his daughter Andréa Javor of Hoboken, New Jersey; his nieces Vivienne Vasak and Judith Koslowski of Sydney, Australia; his grandnephews David Vasak of Chicago, Illinois, Oliver Vasak of New York City, and Wilber and Finn Koslowski of Sydney, Australia; his beloved dog Kobi; his cats Mila and Sydney; and his granddog Titus.
