George J. Hawes, 87, of Anderson, passed away on September 21, 2016 at Countryside Manor Health and Living Community. He was born on December 24, 1928 in Columbus, Indiana and resided most of his life in Anderson.
George graduated from Arsenal Technical High School of Indianapolis in 1947, and Purdue University in 1953 where he earned a bachelor of science degree in Industrial Engineering.
He retired from Delco Remy in 1989.
He was a member of Central Christian Church where he served as an Elder, Deacon, and Trustee. He was an Eagle Scout and former Scout Master, and he earned the Silver Beaver award for his work as an adult volunteer. He was a long time active member and past president of the American Cancer Society of Madison County, past president of the Anderson Exchange Club and past president of the Madison County Lincoln Club. He also was a former precinct committeeman and won the “Abe Lincoln Award” as Madison County’s Republican of the Year in 1972. George was a former member of the Elks Lodge #209, the Moose Lodge #150, and the Legion of the Moose #36.
George is survived by his loving sons, George Kelly (Teri) Hawes and William Kevin (Donna) Hawes both of Anderson; grandchildren, Erin (Dan) Maden, Michelle (Eric) Lusher, Susan (Doug) McElroy, Christopher Hawes, Sam Hawes, Jason Hawes, and Mackenna Hawes; and great-grandchildren, Sean Maden and Jocelyn Lusher. Also surviving are a brother, Tom (Donna) Hawes, brother-in-law, Paul (Tina) Smith, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Nancye E. (Smith) Hawes; daughter, Kimberly Ellen Hawes; mother, Mary (Hawes) Greene; and father, Stanley Jackson.
