HAVERHILL- George J. Fikis, 79, of Haverhill, passed away peacefully Tuesday evening, April 17, 2012 at the Hannah Duston Healthcare Center, Haverhill. He was surrounded by his loving family and friends as his time neared to depart to His Heavenly Father above.
Born on the Island of Cyprus on January 5, 1933, son of the late John and Xanthippe (Cholaki) Fikis was raised in Cyprus and immigrated to the United States when he was 20 years of age. He resided in Fitchburg, MA with his Uncle Chris and Aunt Helen Cholaki for years prior to moving to Haverhill.
George was married for 55 years on April 28, 1957 to Christina (Menounos) Fikis of Haverhill.
He later moved to Haverhill with his wife in the early 1960’s where they began to raise their family. A very hardworking man, he worked for the former Bella Vista Restaurant, Haverhill and then several shoe manufacturers including Cardinal Shoe Factory, Liberty Shoe, and Lawrence Made Shoe. He later began George’s Painting Co., in Haverhill, which he operated until his retirement.
As an avid gardener, he loved his roses and watching his tomatoes and other vegetables grow and would offer his planting secrets to all who would listen. A connoisseur of good food, he also loved to cook and enjoyed entertaining and hosting family and friends. He spent many hours meeting with friends at the Greek coffee house throughout the years. His personality was larger than life and he relished in telling his many stories and singing any chance he could. Those who met him could not forget him and his great love of life will forever be remembered.
In addition to his wife Christina, his surviving family members include his loving children, Xanthie and her husband Evangelos Lazarakis of Haverhill, Penelope and her husband Andreas Orfanos of Haverhill, Joanna and her husband Constantine Nifakos of Plaistow, NH, Nikie Fikis of Haverhill, and John Fikis of NJ. His grandchildren include, Eugenia and her husband Bill Dimopoulos, Christina and her husband Stefanos Gkoudoulas, Constantine Lazarakis, Angela and her husband Konstantinos Mitsopoulos, Giorgia Lazarakis, Panayiotis Orfanos, George, Maria and Nicholas Nifakos and five great-grandchildren. His siblings include Marina and Chris of England; Theofilla, Irene, and Andrianna of Cyprus; and the late Panayiotis. He also has many nieces, nephews and cousins both here and abroad.
