George Harlow Chapman was born October 24,1936 to Harlow Hansen and Leona (Hetzel) Chapman in Eldora, Iowa.  He passed away October 7, 2016 at home.

George was married to his wife Mary Koffman for 49 years. He worked for the Iowa Department of Transportation starting in Creston and then later transferring to Chariton for a total of 43 years, retiring in January of 2002.  Since that time George has kept busy doing something continuously.

In his early years of life, even while working, George was active in drag racing in Eddyville starting out as Chapman and Carpenter with Richard Carpenter.  They were always trying to improve how the car would run and get a better ET time. Later George bought out Richard and still continued racing for many years. His whole life worked on cars right until the day of his passing.

George was greeted often by many people as “Hi George”, and then he would turn and say, “I don’t know who that was?”. George loved people and they loved him. The last few years George attended many car shows with his friend Ricky Schramm, sometimes winning, but either way George loved going to the shows.

George is survived by his wife Mary (Koffman), sister Margaret Patten of Altamonte Springs, FL, sister-in-law Georgie Sebben, Shelia Koffman of Albia, many nieces and nephews and cousins. George was a good husband, son, brother and uncle, always trying to help the family in many ways when needed.

George was preceded in death by his father Harlow Chapman, mother Leona Chapman, mother and father -in-laws, George and Gertrude Koffman, four brother-in-law’s, Aunts, Uncles and lots of friends. George will be missed greatly by his family and many friends.
