George Gilbert “Gib” Gower, Jr., age 79, of Route 2, Shelby Run Community, Grafton, passed away Monday, January 17, 2011, at the Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center, Clarksburg. He was born in Fairmont, WV, May 9, 1931, a son of the late George G. Gower, Sr. and Garnet (Tomlinson) Gower. His wife of 54 years, Mary Margaret (Hebb) Gower, preceded him in death in 2005. Gib is survived by: his daughter, Debra Sue Phillips and Jimmie Ray Phillips, both of Grafton; two grandchildren, Robin Shingleton and husband Patrick, of Grafton, and Jesse Ray Phillips and wife Samantha (Rush), Blacksville, WV; five great grandchildren, Jaxon Arden Phillips, Evelyn “Evie” Early Rush Phillips, MacKenzie Sky Shingleton, Dylan T. Shingleton, and Bailey S. Shingleton; two sisters-in-law, Marie Gower and Pauline Gower, both of Grafton; and several beloved nieces and nephews. He had a special place in his heart for his son-in-law, Jimmie Ray Phillips, and considered him his son. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family having been preceded in death by two brothers, Carlos “Jake” Gower, and Lowell Gower, and one sister, Delores (Gower) Bolyard. Gib was a US Army veteran of the Korean War having served in Germany from 1951-1954. He was a member of the VFW Memorial City Post #3081 and the American Legion Taylor County Post #12.
