WESTFIELD – George F. Carney, 87, passed away on November 6, 2022. George was born in Springfield, MA, on February 18, 1935, to the late Frederick G. and Anna P. (Liebel) Carney.

George grew up in Springfield’s Hungry Hill neighborhood. He graduated from Commerce High School Class of 1953. George proudly served his country in the National Guard. 

George enjoyed being the president of the Men’s Club at St.

George worked for A&P supermarkets for many years. George later owned and operated Carney’s Fruits and Vegetables in Springfield, which became the neighborhood spot to meet up. Finally, George ended his working career, retiring from Prudential. After his retirement, George and his wife Marilyn traveled cross country. They then enjoyed many years with great friends living in Polk County, FL, during the winter months.  

In addition to his parents, George is predeceased by his son Donald Carney, his brothers Frederick, Eugene, Joseph, and his sister Ann Hemsworth. Survivors include his beloved wife of 64 years, Marilyn (Farrell) Carney; his sons Paul Carney of Springfield, Brian Carney and his partner Erica McLean of Westfield; his daughters Lynn Lapponese and her husband Pasquale of Belchertown, Beth Reneris of Granville and Dawn Spear and her husband Michael of Springfield, his daughter-in-law Debbie Carney of Southwick, his sister Mary Cipriani-Allen of East Longmeadow, his cherished grandchildren Kelly Carney-Pires, Alaina Fennington and her husband Stephen, Daniel Carney, Taryn Hearn and her husband Steve, Zachary Lapponese, Rachel Lapponese, Nicole Reneris, and her partner Steven, Leah Spear, Jenna Spear, and Griffin Spear, his 15 great-grandchildren, along with many other family members and friends.
