George Dewey (G.D.) Smith passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, October 10, 2022, at 98 years old. He was born on July 15, 1924, in Leck, VA, to the late George D. and Mattie (Grizzle) Smith. He married the former Ruth Sykes on April 23, 1945, and they made their home in Ashland where he worked at F.E. Myers for 36 years before retiring in 1982. He and Ruth then moved to Florida before returning to Ashland in 1999.
George was a member of the “Greatest Generation,” the likes of which we will never see again. He was a proud WWII Army veteran and was serving as a Troop Commander in the Philippines when a grenade exploded in his foxhole. The doctors were unable to remove all of the shrapnel so he carried it “in my backside” for the rest of his life. He was a member of the VFW and the Eagles Club.
George and Ruth had six children- Sue Meyer of Jeromesville, Barbara (Michael) Michalovich of Ashland, David (Debbie) Smith of Vero Beach, FL, Philip Smith of Orlando, FL., Curtis Smith (deceased) and Elizabeth Holsinger (deceased). They had nine grandchildren- Michael Meyer, Damon (Jayne) Meyer, Tiffany Meyer, Jody Rowe, Shane (Rachel) Ewbanks, Alexandra Smith, Jessica Smith, Sunshine (Jason) Imhoff and Todd (Holly) Holsinger, 14 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters, Iris Britton of Kissimmee, FL and Helen Viers of Ormond Beach, FL and a son-in-law, Mark Holsinger.
He was preceded in death by Ruth, his beloved wife of 57 years; his sisters, Evon Andrews and Opal Johnson; his brother, Carl Smith; a brother-in-law, George Britton, and a son-in-law John (J.C.) Meyer.
His family would like to express their gratitude to the team at Southern Care Hospice for their wonderful care of George.
