George A. Cortez 71, a Deming resident passed away at La Posada Nursing Home in Las Cruces, with his son at his side Friday, December 23, 2016.

George was born to Lorenzo Cortez and Bertha Aguilar on December 23, 1945. He grew up in Chino, Calif., and would be drafted in the great draft lottery of December 1969… I (Marc Cortez), often recall his stories of being dragged off in his underwear by the military police to fulfill his obligation. As a child, I can often remember pulling on his scruffy beard. My father was both mysterious and amazing to me.

Despite being incarcerated, he still managed to get me the desires of my heart. He preached the word in jail and once saved a woman’s life during a prison riot in Estancia, NM. George was an amazing artist and not just paintings he could draw and airbrush and as many of you know he could also tattoo. Yes, he was many things a father, a soldier, and an artist. He left this world on the fog-covered morning of his birthday; may he rest in the Kingdom of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

He is survived by son Marc(Elvia) Cortez of El Paso, TX.; sister Alicia (Neal) Middlemiss of Denver, CO; niece and nephew Rebecca and Joseph Alba of Colorado Springs, CO.

He was preceded in death by his parents Lorenzo and Bertha and one sister Mary Helen Sease.
