George B. Jessen, Jr., 89, of Oglesby, died on Thursday, September 18, at his home. George was born on July 13, 1925, in Spring Valley to George and Elida (Gunnarrsson) Jessen.

He retired from the Oglesby Post Office, and also served with the Oglesby Police Department, serving as the Assistant Chief of Police, retiring in 1969. George also helped at Prey Funeral Home, then Prey-Mueller Funeral Home for many years, and at Action Oil for a number of years. He was a graduate of LaSalle-Peru Township High School. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of WWII, serving in the Pacific Theater of Operations on an LST. He married Catherine Byrne on September 3, 1947, At. St. Roch’s Church in LaSalle. He was a member and former vice-president and president of AARP in Oglesby, a life member of the Oglesby American Legion, a member of the Civil War Round Table, and a former member of the Oglesby Elks Club.

He is survived by one son Drew B. (Nida) Jessen of Oglesby, 2 grandchildren, Theresa (Steve) Tipton, of LaSalle, and Vincent Jessen of Carbondale, 5 great-grandchildren, Catherine, Mikaela, Peytyn, Austyn, and Hunter Tipton, and one sister, Ella Stirnes, of Oglesby.

He was preceded in death by his wife, one daughter Melody A. Jessen, one son, Randy Jessen, one brother, Ken, and three sisters, Charlotte, Margaret, and Ebba.
