George A. Smith, 87, of Centralia, passed away at home with his family by his side on Tuesday, January 31, 2017. He was born September 29, 1929 in Middletown, Indiana, son of Carl Smith and Emma (Comstock) Smith. He married Betty Lee Self on November 6, 1950 in Terre Haute, Indiana and she preceded him in death on November 26, 2008.
He is survived by a son, Roy “Pete” Smith and wife Margaret of Centralia; five grandchildren: Travis Smith and wife Stacie of Centralia, Shelby King and husband Rusty of Centralia, Shannon Parker and husband Jeremy of North Carolina, George Smith of North Carolina, and Jackie Proffitt and husband Joey of Tennessee; six great-grandchildren: Maddie, Jacob, Nathan, Ruby, Griffin, and Pricella; a daughter-in-law, Shelly Smith of Centralia; a brother: Howard Smith of Indiana; three sisters-in-law: Jane Aaron, Billie Jo Miller, and Barbara Ann Scanlan and husband Jack all of Centralia; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife: Betty Lee Smith, a son: Larry W. Smith, brother Jimmy Smith, brothers-in-law: Jesse Miller, R. D. Campbell, Kenneth Aaron and Dale Goss, a sister-in-law: Jean Smith.
George served in the U.S. Army and the U.S. Air Force. He retired from the Illinois Central Railroad as a yard master. He also worked for Burges Bridge Company Heavy Equipment operator. He enjoyed golf and fishing. His greatest enjoyment was spending time with his family and friends.
