Those left to honor Gene’s memory include his wife, Mary Ann of Newton; 2 daughters–Sindy (and Bryan) Brooks of Denver, Colorado and Shelly (and Bob) Fitzgerald of Castle Rock, Colorado; 4 step-sons–Bobby Jackson, Jr. of Newton, Jay Jackson of Ames, Jerald “Deuce” (and April) Porter II of Columbus, OH, and Mark Porter of Newton; 1 step-daughter, Michelle Jackson of Kellogg; 8 grandchildren–Adam Wozniak, Joseph Wozniak, Luke Wozniak, Jessica Daiker, Nicholas Daiker, Nolan Bauer, Gerald “Trey” Porter III, and Julian Porter; and 1 great-grandchild, Cayden Wozniak.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Roy D. “Shorty” and Carrie M. (Cooper) Schermerhorn, and his grandparents.

Gene graduated from Newton High School in 1957. He had worked at WinPower and also worked as a welder. Gene had been an assembling assistant and bronze sculptor for Veryl Goodnight. He most recently worked as a skilled trades leader at the Newton Correctional Facility for 13 years before retiring in 2001.
