Mr. Gene Douglas Freeman, 88, of Clinton, NC, passed away Monday, July 10, 2017, at Sampson Regional Medical Center.
Born in 1928 in Forsyth County to the late Roy & Ollie Crews Freeman, Gene grew up in Mayodan, NC, where he graduated from Mayodan High School. He was proud to serve in the US Army from 1950-1952, and was a member of the Clinton Lions Club, the Masonic Order, the Shriners and the Fraternal Order of Knights of Pythias. He was a member of Graves Memorial Presbyterian Church.
Gene was a retired funeral director and embalmer of Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home in Fayetteville, NC. His true compassion for others was evident in both his profession and in his everyday life. In addition to his caring nature, he was also very meticulous, which was reflected in his hobbies that included woodworking and stained glass work. He always treasured time with his family and liked to fish, put together jigsaw puzzles, and watch old movies.
Gene was preceded in death by his wife, Kathryn Anne Creech Freeman; and a sister, Muriel Freeman Shearin. He leaves to cherish his memories his daughter, Bonnie Barr and husband Dr. Carl Barr of Clinton, a special grandson Hunter Dalby (Amber & Kaylie Honeycutt) of Durham, Melanie Royster (Mike) of Aiken, SC, Andrew Barr (Kim) of Greenville, SC, Kristina Cota (Mark) of Aiken, SC, Heather Griffin (Robert) of Memphis, TN, Chris Barr of Denver, CO, Genevieve Costa (Helder & Zoey Pontiff) of New Bern, NC; a special niece, Brenda Crotts (Jim) of Greensboro, NC, a great-niece, Sharon Carter (Ted & Sarah Catherine) of Durham, NC, a great-nephew, Jimmy Crotts of Greensboro, NC, & six great grandchildren.
