Gary William Vannart, otherwise known as “Veeg”, age 81 of Westport, passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by loving family Saturday, December 5, 2020. He was born in Norwalk, the son of the late Joseph and Marguerite (Zeoli) Vannart, and had been a lifelong Westport resident. A 1958 graduate of Staples High School, Gary served for two years on active duty with the U.S. Navy where he spent 9 months onboard the USS Newport News (CA-148) and cruised the Mediterranean Sea. The remainder of his enlistment was assigned to the Patuxent Naval Air Station. Gary’s career as an Oil Burner Technician spanned many years. He was employed by LH Gault & Son and was later self-employed for over 40 years.

Gary loved softball and managed the Sunday morning softball games at Compo Beach for over 40 years, where he made numerous life-long friends. His teammates were often called upon to compete late into the winter to help him fulfill his goal of winning 20 games each season. Gary spent years as the assistant coach for the Tauck Tours team in the Westport Women’s Softball League and was proud to help guide them to the Nationals one great season. In addition, Gary also loved playing in basketball and tennis leagues in Westport throughout his life. When Gary was not playing sports, he was
well-known around town for being a loyal “regular” at local diners (Pal Joeys, The Commuter, Sherwood Diner).

Gary was most known for his storytelling, his sense of humor, and his upbeat approach to life. He had more friends than most, and loved hanging out at Compo Beach with his “crew” all year long.
Survivors include two beloved children, Jacqueline Vannart of Milford and Jeffrey J. Vannart of Westport; and two grandchildren Emma and Sam Vannart of Westport.
