Gary Giel Gore, of Nashville, Tennessee, on March 28, 2021, of natural causes. He was 89 years old. Gary was born born November 1, 1931 in Lincoln, NE, the son of Leroy and Grace Gore. He was preceded in death by his parents, his two siblings, older brother Don and younger sister Kristene, previous wife Jean Thomas Gore, as well as his son, Mark Gore. Gary is survived by his wife of 25 years, Kathryn Nethercutt Gore, his son Bruce Gore [Vicki], his daughter Kymberly Alsup [Craig], step-son Mike Dixon, and numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Gary was raised primarily in Fort Atkinson, WI. His father was a small town newspaper editor, and Gary worked in his father’s newspaper print shops as he grew up. It clearly influenced his career path, as he ultimately ventured into printing, publication and book design after leaving home. His early career years moved him to Madison, WI, Richmond, VA, Kingsport, TN, and finally to Nashville, TN in 1965. He came to Nashville to work at Vanderbilt University Press. After the press closed a few years later, he found work with the American Association for State and Local History [AASLH]. He ultimately returned to Vanderbilt University in the early 1980s as University Designer, and later as Director of Publications. He retired from Vanderbilt in 1998. Book design had become his love and his passion, and after leaving Vanderbilt, he continued to provide freelance design for numerous publishers around the country, until his health finally forced him to fully retire only a couple of years ago.
