Gary E. Schmaltz, 74, formerly of Three Oaks, Michigan died Monday morning, March 16, 2015 at his home in Portage, Michigan. Gary was born January 3, 1941 in Benton Harbor, Michigan to Ernest and and Beatrice (Heyn) Schmaltz. He graduated from Bridgman High School in 1959 and earned his degree in Mechanical Engineering at Tri State College. Gary married Mary Lou Reid on June 23, 1962 in Three Oaks.

He holds a patent for a press that was the fastest in the world when he designed it. He had served in the Marine Reserves. Gary was a Ham radio operator, a bicyclist, and member of the Three Oaks Spokes. Gary was an avid reader. He was interested in firearms and was a competitive shooter, taking part in Cowboy Action Shooting.

Gary was a member of the F.O.P. #98 in Kalamazoo and had served on the Three Oaks Police Force for many years and retired from the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Department.Survivors include his wife, Mary Lou; sons, Craig (Michelle) of Mattawan and Scott of Denver, Colorado; grandchildren, Reid and C.J., sister Connie Schmidt of Baroda, and his Aunt Quanita “Tootie” Blosser of Bridgman.

He was preceded in death by his father, Ernest, mother, Beatrice Rahling; and his daughter Angela Lynn Demaria who died March 28, 2009.Cremation has taken place. Source link
