Garnet L. Boles, 88, formerly of Upland, passed away Monday afternoon at Chicagoland Christian Village, Crown Point. She was born in Upland the daughter of the late Arthur D. and Emma (Steinhilber) Thornburgh.

In 1937 she graduated from Jefferson High School and in 1941 graduated from Methodist Hospital School of Nursing as an R.N. Mrs. Boles was employed early in her nursing career at Methodist Hospital and retired in 1983 from the Obstetrics Dept. of Blackford Community Hospital. As an Army Nursing Corps. Veteran, she served, during WW II from 1943 to 1946, with the 101st Evacuation Hospital with tours in Normandy, France, Rhineland, and Central Europe. She was awarded the American Theatre Ribbon, EAME Theatre Ribbon w/1 Silver Battle Star, and 3 Overseas Service Bars.

Survivors include a son, James (Raija) Boles, Grand Rapids; a daughter, Susan (Paul) Benton, Cedar Lake; four brothers, Alfred Thornburgh, Warren, Lewis Thornburgh, Monroe, MI, Raymond Thornburgh, Albany, Cledith Thornburgh, Hartford City; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Michael; a daughter; Barbara June, two brothers, Nathan, and Jack; and a sister, Madge Nuckols.
