Frederick F. Wohlstein passed away after a brief illness at age 78 on March 23, 2022 at the home of Frederick F. Wohlstein IV and Marie, his son and daughter-in-law. Fred was born in Schenectady, New York, to Frederick F. Wohlstein and Ellen Sheward while his father was serving in World War II. His father’s plane was subsequently shot down resulting in his father’s death. His mother Ellen died some years after.

 

Fred is survived by his wife, Karen J. (Van Heukelom) Wohlstein to whom he was devoted for 58 years. He is further survived by his brother, Ronald T. Wohlstein and Ron’s wife Donna of Charleston, Illinois. He is survived by his brother-in-law, Rev. Ronald Van Heukelom and his wife Carol of Ankeny, Iowa; and his sister-in-law, Mary E. Hiemstra and her husband John of Houston, Texas.

 

Having met his wife Karen at William Penn College in Oskaloosa, Iowa, they married in 1964 and thereafter graduated together in 1965. After attending a year at Western Theological Seminary in Holland, Michigan, Fred moved to New York and graduated from Simmons School of Directing and Embalming.

 

Eventually Fred moved his wife and three children to Indianapolis, Indiana, to serve families at Flanner and Buchanan. While in Indiana, Fred qualified as a member of the Gideons and continued as a member until his death,

 

 

The most loved on this earth by Fred were his children and grandchildren: daughter Diana H. Hale of Monument, Colorado; son Frederick F. (Marie) Wohlstein IV and wife Marie, and their children: Zachary Wohlstein and his fiancee Emely, Parker Wohlstein and his fiancee Nichole, and Alexis Wohlstein; daughter Enid G. Wohlstein and her husband John Gorman, and their children, Maggie Gorman and Jack Gorman.
