Fred W. Schmid, Jr., 97, of Silver Ridge Park Westerly section of Berkeley Twp., NJ, passed away Thursday, August 23, 2018. Born in Closter, NJ, he lived in Demarest, NJ and Roxbury, NY before moving to Berkeley Twp. in 2000. Fred was a US Navy WWII veteran, serving in the Asiatic Pacific Campaign on the USS Burleigh. His ship led the invasion of Guadalcanal. He received the Asiatic Pacific Ribbon with 2 stars, the American Theatre Ribbon, the Good Conduct Medal and the Victory Ribbon. He worked in the Accounting Department at American Tobacco Co. in New York City for 40 years.

Fred was a member and past Commander of the American Legion Post 111, Closter, NJ. Fred served as a member of the Demarest Police Reserves. He was predeceased by his sister Claire. Fred is survived by his wife of 70 years, Clare (nee Lyons), his daughter and son in law Jane and Thomas Young of Toms River, a son and daughter in law F. William III and Susan Schmid of Ellsworth, Maine, two grandchildren Christine Hoffman and her husband Edward of Marlton, NJ, Catherine Weintraub and her husband Michael of Toms River and two great grandchildren Caitlyn Hoffman and Elosie Weintraub.
