Fred Turner, Jr, 96 passed away on Thursday March 3, 2016.
Mr. Turner was born in Paris Crossing, IN. He lived in Flagstaff, AZ and then Cyprus in Eastern Mediterranean before moving to Honolulu, HI. He moved to Kearny one year ago.
Fred, a Colonel in the U.S. Air Force served in World War II from 1940 through 1946 in the Asiatic-Pacific, and also during the Korean War from 1951 through 1954.
He earned his BS from the University of Arizona in 1948; his MS from Washington State University in 1951; and his PhD. from Michigan State University in 1958.
Mr. Turner was a professor and department head of soil and water at Sultan Qaboos University, Muscat, Oman from 1988 until 1994. Prior to that, he served as an advisor to the USAID and the University of Arizona in Fortaleza, Brazil,
He was a certified by the American Registry of Certified Professionals in agronomics, crops and soils.
Fred was the recipient of the Appreciation Award from the University of Arizona Alumni Association in 1966; the Public Service Award from the National Weather Service, Washington, D.C., 1976; and the Silver Beaver Award, Boy Scouts of America, Phoenix, 1976.
He is survived by his wife Gloria E. (nee Lopez) Turner and two children Fred Lynwood Turner, and Venny Jean Turner.
