Fred R. Unwin, Sr. was born at home in Ridgefield, CT, on April 24, 1935 to Vera and Edward Unwin. Fred graduated from Stratford High School in 1952 and from the University of Bridgeport in 1958.
He began working in the automobile business at 13 years old and continued in this industry throughout his life. Fred also worked in real estate. A quote often used by Fred was “I do it my way. Now I apologize.” His 15 minutes of fame came to him when he convinced the Town of Easton to accept the Swimming Association, now the Town Park.
Fred was a lifetime member of the Easton Volunteer Fire Dept, BPOE #36, a member of the Arts Quick Center, Ivoryton Playhouse, Bruce Museum, Yale Museum, Bridgeport Historical Society, Mystic Seaport, NY Bronx Botanical Gardens, etc.
He is survived by Fred R. Unwin, Jr., and his partner, Phil, of Lakewood, Ohio; Sandra Wright (James) of Easton, CT; Gregg (Renee) of Tucson, Arizona; grandchildren Dan Wright (Shari) and Katie Toppel (John), Jessica Unwin, Nicole Unwin; great grandchildren Alyssa, Aubrey, Adrianna, and Alexander Wright, and Grace and Samantha Toppel; and several nieces and nephews.
He is predeceased by his late wife, Sue; brother, Robert Unwin; and sisters, Ruth Gray and Nancy Valentine.
