Fred James Kovar

1930 – 2015

Fred “Coach” Kovar, age 85, of St. Louis, MO/Fort Walton Beach, FL, passed away on July 8, 2015.  Fred was preceded in death by his wife Joan (Kirby) Kovar.  He is survived by his children, LTC. Louis (Maureen) Kovar, Dr. John (Pam) Kovar, Kathy (Sam) Price, Anita (Steve) Craig, Diane (Dwayne “Bear”) Cooper and Carolyn Kovar.  Grandchildren, Dr. Kristin Kovar, Tony (Jessica) Craig, John (Raquel) Kovar, Stephen Craig, Katie Kovar, Justin (Hope VanNoske) Cooper, Mark Price, Kelsea (Austin) Massingill, John Price, Kirby Cook and Kaiti Plunkett.

“Freddy” was well known in the St. Louis area for his outstanding basketball career at Beaumont High School and St. Louis University.  As quoted by Coach Tom Stanton of Beaumont, “Freddy Kovar was the greatest player I ever coached.  He commanded the game.  He was great, not only as a player but as a gentleman”.  “Coach” as he was known by his students, was a beloved and caring high school math teacher and coach at both Chaminade and University City High Schools.

A special thanks to all those at Fort Walton Beach Medical Center and Westwood Retirement Center, and especially to Suzanne Seemann, Wink and Robin “Pepper” Yelverton and his loving caregiver and son-in-law, “Bear”.

Fred was a devout Catholic and a humble, devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend and will be greatly missed.
