Fred was born in Plainview, Nebraska to John Scheuerer and Magdalene (Seyller) Scheuerer, the youngest of nine children. His younger years were spent working the family farm as well as haying and picking corn for neighboring farmers. He graduated from high school in 1946. After graduation, he stayed on the farm with his parents until enlisting in the U.S. Air Force in 1951.
