Fred Bailey was born October 23, 1926 at home near Keosauqua, Iowa. An aunt later told him it was a dark, windy, rainy, muddy night. The family of 4 boys and 4 girls lived in rural Iowa with their parents on their farm. Fred attended a one room country school through grade 8. After finishing high school in Keosauqua, Fred enlisted in the Army Air Corps; he qualified for pilot training but received an early discharge due to the end of WWII.
Fred attended Iowa State College before he started at Allied Mutual Insurance in Des Moines, Iowa. On December 31, 1948 he was introduced by mutual friends to Phyllis Macey and they were married on December 31, 1949.
In August 1950, during the Korean War, Fred was recalled by the Air Force and stationed in Rapid City, South Dakota for 1 year.
Back in Des Moines, they had 2 children, Steven was born in 1951 and Terese (Teri), in 1953. They were a happy family and camped often in the Midwest and also camped from coast to coast. They acquired a boat and combined camping, traveling, water skiing and many other activities. In 1966 Fred was transferred to Lincoln, Nebraska. In 1968, he was transferred to Denver, Colorado and in 1970, to Boise, Idaho. In Denver they added snow skiing to their activities, and Idaho with all of it’s opportunities for fun became their permanent home. In Idaho they explored many areas and added gold mining and archeology to their other hobbies. After retirement, they went RVing across western USA and stayed south in the winters.
Fred’s wife, Phyllis, died May 11, 2013. He is survived by his son Steven (Patsy) of Boise, and daughter Terese (Teri) Hutton (Charley) of Nampa. Grandchildren include Gretchen, Tom, Dallan, Carey, Kylie and numerous great grandchildren.
Fred is survived by sister Edith Eymen of Phoenix, AZ and brother Dick Bailey of Groom, TX. He was preceded in death by brothers Lee and Clyde and sisters Ruth, Edna, and Ester.
