Frederick Leo Brown Sr. was born July 11, 1934 in Newton the son of Preston Leo and
Pauline Ruth Hummel Brown. He received his education in Colfax. From 1952 to
1955 he was enlisted in the Army where he served as a corporal in Korea with
the 24th Infantry, 63rd Field Artillery Battalion.

On September 23, 1954, he was united in marriage with Betty Arlene Alexander, at
the Catholic Community Chapel in Fort Bliss, TX. He worked at Maytag
Corporation in Skilled Trades as well as sheet metal for 31 years.

Fred was a member and former Post Commander of the American Legion Post 111 and lifetime member of the VFW.  As an avid bowler his accolades include: first 700 series at Triangle Lanes in Colfax, first 700 series at T&M Center Lanes in Newton, 1975 State Tournament Singles Champion, first 300 game at Cardinal Lanes in Newton, 1990 Iowa State Mixed Doubles Champion, 1990 American Legion State Singles Champion. Fred served as director, president, and secretary of the Jasper County Bowling Association Board. He was elected to Iowa State Board of Directors in 1989 and was the State Association President in 1996-1997. In 2005, he was inducted into the Iowa Bowling Hall of Fame.

Fred was a president of Babe Ruth Baseball where he coached and managed Little League Baseball for 13 years. In his later years, Fred could be found chasing a golf ball around Colfax Country Club.

He is survived by his wife, Betty; five children Frederick Leo Jr. and Nancy Brown,
Loretta Jean Brown and Larry Bowman, Preston Joseph and Linda Brown, Matthew
William Brown, Patrick ‘Barney’ Howard and Kelli Brown; nine grandchildren and eight
great-grandchildren.
Schumann, James Brown, Paul Brown, Julie Tungwenuk, John Brown, and Mike Brown.

Fred passed February 18, 2013, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton at the age of 78. His
parents and one grandson, Joseph William Brown, preceded him in death.
