Franklin D. “Frankie” Phillips, 60, of Elkhart, passed away peacefully at 8:04 p.m. Friday, Aug. 7, at Elkhart General Hospital, with his family at his side, following an extended illness.
He was born April 15, 1955, in Charleston, W.Va., to the late Franklin D. Phillips and Etherial S. “Buzz” (Foster) Phillips, who reside in Elkhart.
He later married Karen K. (Ellis) on Oct. 21, 1972, in Elkhart. She survives at home.
Also surviving are his children, Dreama (Mark Wortinger) Phillips, Ginger Phillips and Frankie D. Phillips, all of Elkhart, and grandchildren Keith (Mallory) Powell and Destiny and Savannah Phillips, all of Elkhart. He also leaves behind a large number of friends who were considered family, because that’s the type of person Frankie was.
Frankie was a welder at Hadley Products of Elkhart. He was a member of Granger Community Church. He dedicated his life to the Lord’s work through the 180 Outreach program, where he assisted in the rehabilitation, re-entry and placement of members of St. Joseph County and Elkhart County work release programs. Frankie was also involved in stock car racing with his family for many years as No. 42. He frequented area racetracks such as New Paris, Mottville and South Bend. He will be best remembered for his dedication to his outreach ministry and his easygoing and friendly nature.
