Improvement makes straight roads. But, the crooked roads without improvement are the roads of genius. Inspiration, honesty and integrity carried our “Pop Pop” Frank H. Hofmann along those crooked roads for 93 years. We all come to this world to be tourists, enjoy life, go sightseeing and do good deeds. Frank was a man of intellect who also appreciated the natural world’s beauty. Doing easily what others find difficult is talent. Frank was knowledgeable and handy with impeccable mathematical skills. He loved his family, his football and good clean fun. If we can take advice from the ocean; be shore of yourself, come out of your shell, take time to coast, avoid pier pressure, see life’s beauty and don’t let the tide down. However, seeing death as the end of life is as seeing the horizon as the end of the ocean. On Sunday, May 3, 2020 the sunset touched Ship Bottom’s waters at the horizon, and as we closed our day we closed our time together. Frank passed away peacefully at home in Collingswood in the company of his bride.
Mr. Frank Hess Hofmann was born in Runnemede and had been a longtime resident of Collingswood. His home had contributed Frank and his brothers to the manpower of our nation upholding the ideals of our American freedoms. As a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army during WWII, he single handedly earned a Silver Star for gallantry in action. He started his career as a Journeyman draftsman in Philadelphia and over the years worked his way up to shop foreman. His career and road as a Tool & Die Maker was well over 50 years long. The curves took him to Haddon Tool, Magnetic Metals, and eventually to Thomson Lamination Company in Maple Shade, where his talents and contributions are legendary. His inspiration enriched our community as a leader. He had been a Scoutmaster in Runnemede and longtime member of the Rising Sun Mason Lodge #15 in Haddonfield. Frank and his family traveled the country dragging their pop-up camper coast to coast. He enjoyed square and round dancing and summers at the beach house in Ship Bottom. At home, he and his wife enjoyed football and passionately cheered on the “IGGLES”! Pop Pop will fondly be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.
Family is like music. Some high notes, some low notes but always a good song. We must remember the music of the past, so we can sing in the present and dance in the future. Mr. Hofmann leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 72 years, Edna (nee Cochran) Hofmann. He is the father of Kurt & his wife Christina, Glenn & his wife Debra, and Carla & her husband Mark Nichols. He is the proud grandfather of 7 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Frank is survived by his brother Raymond and was predeceased by his brothers William, Karl and Kenneth Hofmann.
