Frank A. Koster, a lifelong resident of the Philadelphia area (Philadelphia, Broomall and Germantown), passed away on July 17, 2023. Born on October 3, 1942 to the late Frank and Albina Koster, Frank was a devoted son, brother, uncle and great-uncle who will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
Frank studied English at Villanova University, where he fostered his interest in literature and history. Frank was drafted into the U.S. Army and stationed in Germany, where he served his country with distinction. Later, Frank proudly served as a Chief Petty Officer in the U.S. Coast Guard. His commitment to service and leadership was evident in his dedication to his role and his country. Frank thrived as a member of the Coast Guard. He carried out many aspects of a military lifestyle, as well as the discipline and skills acquired throughout his life.
Following his service, Frank brought his discipline and attention to detail to his professional roles at General Electric (Lockheed Martin). He was admired by his colleagues for his work ethic; and his career was marked by his commitment to precision, integrity, and excellence.
Beyond his professional life, Frank had an array of interests that brought him joy and fulfillment. A keen reader, he was never without a book in his hand, and he had an interest in both fiction and real-world events. Frank was also an avid film and television enthusiast. In 2004, Frank fondly experienced a moment in the world of cinema when hired as a recurring extra in the film “Annapolis”. Beyond his film debut, he could often be found at home, engrossed in a novel or movie, although skiing and bowling lured him out to be with friends. His passion for sailing was born out of his time with the Coast Guard, and he spent many happy hours on the water. He enjoyed cars and loved driving and riding in his convertibles. Frank also enjoyed many years of membership and service as part of the Knights of Columbus.
Frank was the beloved brother to Polly Koster and Susan (Koster) Bentley and brother-in-law to the late John Bentley and the late Stewart Donges and “adopted” brother to Stuart Oser. He was a cherished uncle to Ingrid (Donges) Lijoi (Joseph Lijoi), Jesse (Barrabee) Parry (Zach Parry), Beau Barrabee (Tara Barrabee), and Matthew Barrabee (Elizabeth Barrabee), and an adored great-uncle to Hannah (Lijoi) Lucas (Jade Lucas), Christopher, Cecilia, Susannah, and Regina Lijoi, Grace and Xavier Parry, Emma and Lily Barrabee, and Luke and Nicholas Barrabee. Frank was a great friend to many. He was easy to engage with, and his sincerity and thoughtfulness were evident through his conversations and interactions with others. He made others feel safe, providing a calm and wise demeanor.
In his 80 years, Frank lived a life full of service, love, and adventure. His commitment to family will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. While we mourn his loss, we also celebrate a life well lived, marked by accomplishment, joy, and an undeniable zest for life.
