Francis (Frank) J. Longen

Mr. Francis (Frank) Longen was born September 23, 1922, in Eureka, South Dakota and passed away peacefully in his sleep on March 3, 2017, at his home in Ellicott City, Maryland.

Most of Frank’s early years were spent in Gregory, South Dakota. Following high school, he worked for a local bank before enlisting in the U.S. Army Signal Corps. He later transferred to the Army Air Corps. After his discharge in 1946 he moved to the Washington, D.C. area where he accepted employment with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Frank also attended George Washington University in the evenings, majoring in Business Administration.

While working at the USDA, Frank met and soon married Helen A. Diehl, of Schellsburg, Pennsylvania. They spent more than 60 years living in Adelphi, Maryland, where they raised three children.

Frank was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Community in Silver Spring where he was also active with the St. John the Baptist Council on the Knights of Columbus. After their recent move to Ellicott City, Frank become a member of Church of the Resurrection Catholic Church.

Just five days after Frank’s passing, his wife of 63 years, Helen, followed him to their eternal home. Frank is survived by Deborah Judy (Chris), Roberta Saah (Michael), James Longen (Julie); grandchildren, Dana Judy, Nicole and Michelle Saah, Christopher Longen (Jessica), Jenna and Luke Longen; great-grandchildren, Benjamin, Avery, and Sawyer.
