Lorraine Garrett
Most Christian families celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ as their Savior and the difference he has made in their lives during this time of the year. Our family will not only celebrate the birth of our Savior Jesus, but the wonderful life of our Frances Lorraine Garrett. Lorraine was born May 20, 1920, in Elba, Alabama, and later moved to Lakewood. She is the oldest of eight children born to James M. and Sarah Emily Nance, commonly called “Mama Nance” to those who knew and loved her. The family moved to Paxton, Florida, where Lorraine attended Paxton High School until she was 16. She dropped out and got a job to earn enough money for her sister Kate and herself to finish High School, play basketball and graduate together. Kate died about 6 years later with Leukemia.
Lorraine met the love of her life, Burl S. Garrett, Jr. in Florala, Alabama. They were married for 56 years when Burl, Jr. went to be with the Lord and his parents, Burl, Sr. and Martha Garrett of Pensacola, FL. Lorraine and Burl raised two loving, grateful children who loved them very much. The daughter, Dolores Ann Garrett Ramey, a teacher in Tennessee is married to Ron Ramey, and they have two outstanding children: Chandra is married to Greg Schreiner of Gallatin, Tennessee and Jonathan who attends Cumberland University in Lebanon, Tennessee.
Lorraine was a fulltime homemaker, wife, and mother, and her legacy reaches far beyond her two children, 2 grandchildren, and a great grandson due in March. She resided in Fort Walton Beach from 1957 – 1978, moving to Shalimar until 2005, when she moved to Wellington Place of Fort Walton Beach. She met and touched the lives of many and will be missed by those who had the privilege of knowing her and sharing in her journey here on earth. As a Christian family, we know she is watching over us and eagerly awaiting the day we will all meet again in Heaven.
