Forrest Griffith Hoffmaster, age 99, died February 15, 2017 at Baltimore Washington Medical Center. Born in Millville, West Virginia, January 21, 1918, he was a son of the late Robert William and Jessie Moler Hoffmaster. He graduated from West Virginia University in Chemical Engineering in 1939 and worked for two years with the Standard Lime & Stone Co. at Millville, WV. He was drafted into the Chemical Warfare Service of the Army as a Private in 1941. He attended Officer’s Training School at Edgewood Arsenal, MD and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in 1942. He served with the 2nd Air Force, Colorado Springs, CO and later was transferred overseas to the 20th Bomber Command as Assistant Chemical Officer and served with them in India for 13 months. He then served with the 8th Air Force on Okinawa and was discharged from the service in 1945 with the rank of Major. Upon discharge he was employed by W.R. Grace & Co., Davison Chemical Division, Baltimore, MD where he worked for 37 years. After retiring, he became interested in Genealogy and spent many hours researching ancestors.
He was a member of the Linthicum Heights United Methodist Church, a member of the Anne Arundel County Historical Society and a member of the AARP Chapter 3850 in Linthicum. He was also a member of the Harpers Ferry, West Virginia Historical Society and Jefferson County West Virginia Historical Society.
He is survived by his wife, Mildred Barton Hoffmaster, formerly of Charlestown, WV; two sons, Alan B. Hoffmaster of Severn, MD and Paul W. Hoffmaster of Catonsville, MD; three grandsons, one granddaughter, and 3 great-granddaughters.
