Florentino ‘Tino’ Moran, 86, a longtime Deming resident passed away early Sunday morning, October 11, 2009, at Presbyterian Hospital in Albuquerque surrounded by his loving and grateful family.

Florentino was born March 14, 1923 to Eluteria Martinez and Cresencio Moran in Dolores, Texas. In 1941 he came to Deming as a part of the Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC) and on March 23, 1942 he married Genevieve Calderon. He was inducted into the U. S. Army in 1943 and served honorably until 1945 having served in the Normandy and northern France operations. He was a communicant at St. Ann’s Catholic Church and was a mechanic at Brem Chevrolet and Miller Chevrolet in Lordsburg before going to work for the New Mexico Highway Department where he retired.

He continued to do shade tree mechanics for his relatives and friends more for pleasure than profit. While family and work were priorities in his life “Tino” as he was affectionately known, had a great love for the youth of the community and led the way in establishing athletic programs and fields for out of school programs and gave his coaching talents all. Local complexes have come about because of his involvement. He was active in local civic and church organizations; St. Ann’s Men’s Club, League of United Latin American Citizens and Tony Viramontes Chapter of the Disabled American Veterans to name a few. Music was an important part of his life as well, being an accomplished drummer for Los Compas and The Pete Dominguez dance orchestras.

He is survived by sons, Joe Moran and wife Norma of Austin, TX; David Moran and wife Karen of Alexandria, VA and Perry Moran and wife Eva of Rio Rancho; daughters, Rita Gavaldon and husband Salvador of Albuquerque and Genevieve Otero and husband Elbert of Deming; sisters, Lute Gomez of Laredo, TX and Isabel Reyes of Chicago, IL; 16 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Cresencio and Eluteria Moran; wife, Genevieve Moran on March 3, 2004 and infant son, Florentino Moran Jr.
