Florence Sherrod Reneau of Grafton passed away peacefully in her sleep at United Hospital Center in the early morning of April 27. She was 90 years old.
Born August 30, 1925 in Birmingham, AL, Mrs. Reneau was a 1946 graduate of Transylvania University in Lexington, KY where she met her husband, Reverend Oren N. (Ned) Reneau. They were to celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary in June.
The Reneaus moved to Grafton in 1950 where they raised their nine children and Mrs. Reneau taught elementary school for 23 years. After her retirement in 1988, she continued to be involved in the education system, reading to the elementary school classes of her grandchildren who knew her as ‘Granny.’ She was a Girl Scout and 4-H Club leader, member of the West Virginia 4-H All Stars, and active in the First Christian Church at both the local and regional levels. She was also a longtime supporter of West Virginia Wesleyan College from which all of her children graduated. The Oren N. and Florence S. Reneau Scholarship was established at WVWC in 2001.
Well known in the community, Mrs. Reneau was honored by the International Mother’s Day Shrine as their Mother of the Year for the 100th anniversary of Mother’s Day in 2008. She was preceded in death by her parents, Bessie and Thomas Sherrod, her brothers Ray and Frederick, and her foster son David Mays. She is survived by her husband; 9 children, Carolyn (Steve) Shepler of Elkins, Susan (Ed) Westfall of Grafton, Dorothy (Rock) Garton of Jane Lew, Jim (Nancy) Reneau of Grafton, Mary (Bob) Smith of Elkins, Joyce (Leon) Okes of Parkersburg, Tom (Deneane) Reneau of Grafton, Bill (Pam) Reneau of Chesterfield, VA, and Paul (Julie) Reneau of Grafton; foster daughter-in-law, Pat Mays of St Marys; 23 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. She will be dearly missed by those who held to the motto that “If you’re lucky enough to be a Reneau, you’re lucky enough.
