Florence Viola Koestler, age 101 of Burt, Iowa passed away on July 21, 2014 at the Kossuth County Regional Hospital. Florence was born June 3rd, 1913 to Carl Alfred an Etta Bertha (Meinzer) Lovstad on a farm northeast of Burt, Iowa.
Florence attended school at Burt, Iowa and Thief River Falls, Minnesota before graduation from high school in Hallock, Minnesota in 1931. Florence married George C. Koestler Jr. on October 5th, 1934 in Estherville, Iowa. They lived on George Koestler Sr.’s west farm where Vernal Gale Koestler was born. They moved across the road to the family farm in 1941. On this farm Jerry Eugene and Victoria Sue were born. In 1976 they retired and moved into a home in Burt. Florence enjoyed baking, reading, raising flowers and she loved her roses. She also liked to crochet afghans for her grandchildren. Her family and family gatherings brought many wonderful memories. One of those memories was the many summers when nephew Donald Nordin would come out from Burt and stay with them on the farm.
Florence was on the U.R. Home Apartments Committee; helped start Meals on Wheels in Burt, taught Sunday school, religion school, was a member of the Ladies Aid, served on the altar guild and was a long time member at St John’s Lutheran Church. She was a past member of “Queen Candidates Project” in Mason City, Iowa and a member of the Portland Progress Club and officer for many years.
Left to cherish Florence’s memories are two sons, Vern (Joan) Koestler, Jerry (Betty) Koestler and daughter Victoria Sue Koestler. Grand children: Karla (Robert) Bachmann, Cottage Grove, MN, Kim Koestler, Algona, IA, Kevin Koestler, Andover MN, Gracie Koestler, South Elgin, IL and Gwendolyn (Mark) Sreniawski of Plainfield, IL. She has eleven great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. One sister in law, Jane (Russell) Lovstad, still lives in Cloquet, MN. Florence was preceded in death by her parents Carl and Etta Lovstad and husband George (February 1989), sisters Rowena (Adolph) Dahlgren, Agnes (Maynard) Spilseth, brothers, Orval (Lillian), Lester (Pearl), Russell and Marvin (Betty) Lovstad.
