Yesterday we said goodbye to 2017… and to our incredible 97-year-old Mother, Grandmother, Sister and Friend. Though we are joyful for her – she is deeply missed.
Why is it so hard to say goodbye?
Why, when life has been incredibly full and long, does the hurt of loss still creep in?
Why, even when death is the welcome ending, does it feel as though life has robbed us of something precious?
Why?
Because your laugh was contagious.
Because your resilience had an empowering effect on those around you.
Because your strength was awe inspiring.
Because your optimism brightened the world and taught us to see things in a different light.
Because of your tireless work ethic.
Because of your incredible generosity.
Because of long walks to the mailbox.
Because of the time you’d take to simply sit and listen to the birds while the wind would blow through your hair.
And crocheting.
And the lottery.
And tabloids.
And driving your little red truck, and later, your mule.
And staying up until midnight each new years.
And buttermilk.
And horses… still riding into your 90s.
And the way you loved your family… you didn’t need to say it – we all just knew.
No wonder it’s hard to say goodbye. You were incredible.
Yet we feel you with us.
You’re in the wind as it whips through our hair.
You’re in the sunset.
You’re in the sound of footsteps crunching on the gravel.
You’re with each of us – friends and family who carry you in our hearts and each of us are better for having had you in our lives.
