Edgar, NE resident Fern J. Austin departed this life in the early morning hours of December 3rd at her home with her husband and daughter by her bedside. Fern’s death is the result of Chronic Kidney Disease which she fought bravely for over 4 years. The last 2 weeks of her life were spent at home in the loving care of her daughter and her husband with the assistance of the hospice team from Mary Lanning Healthcare.

Fern was born November 4, 1947 in Cozad, NE to Floyd and Dorothea Murray.

Following her mother’s leaving the family, Fern and her two sisters, Cheryl and Dorothy were placed in Grace Children’s Home in Henderson, NE in April 1959. The girls were released into the custody of their aunt, Vera Houchin of Gothenburg, in August of 1966.

Shortly thereafter in 1966, Fern met her lifetime love, Mark.  They married in April of 1967 and gave birth to their son, Troy, in December of that year and then daughter, Tracie, in March of 1970.  Mark and Fern grew up together, they lived and honored their wedding vows and exceptional core values.  They celebrated 54 years of marriage this past April.

Fern was Mamaw to eldest Grandson, Keny Rasmussen of Omaha, NE (Great Grandson Keny Rasmussen of North Platte, NE),  Grandson Dakkota Austin of McCook, NE, (Great Granddaughter Savannah).  She was “Aunt Fern” to her nieces and nephews.

Fern dedicated her life to her family; this was her lifelong career that included looking after her sisters and her family, husband and children.  Fern nursed Troy back to health after a nearly fatal car accident in 1988, as well as playing role of nurse for Tracie and Mark at times.

Fern enjoyed going to bingo, cooking and baking, being a wife, mother, best friend, sister and Grama.  We will miss your smile and all of your unconditional love!

Fern is survived by her husband, Mark, of Edgar, son, Troy, also of Edgar, daughter Tracie Rossi, sisters Cheryl Earll of Edgar and Dorothy Martinez of Grand Island and many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
