Faye Jeannine Carey, 86, passed away Friday, October 8, 2021, at UnityPoint Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

Faye Jeannine Spindler was born in Deadwood, SD, on May 7, 1935. Her father was a well known mechanic who owned Spindler Garage in downtown Deadwood. She was the third child and first girl to Garnett and Carl.

Faye grew up a tomgirl tagging along after her two brothers in her long hair and pigtails. Often her mother would put her on the Jackrabbit Bus with a note and ride it to Miles City, MT to visit her grandparents in the summertime. Faye loved going to the movies and always took a banana. Her first jobs were a paper route (on her bike with her dog, Brownie following close behind) and working at the Bodega Cafe. Growing up she liked to ice skate and dance.

Faye graduated high school in Deadwood and shortly thereafter married Bill Crouse in her hometown. She moved during the early years with him and then settled in Des Moines. She worked at Equitable of Iowa until her children were born, Lori in 1956 and Dan in 1960.

Faye loved animals and had a companion dog her entire life and they meant the world to her. They were treated like royalty and smothered with love. Her first was Brownie and there were many more thereafter.

She returned to the workforce and met and married Tom Carey in 1978 & he added son Thomas and daughter Katie to the family. Together they ran Tom Carey Enterprises for over 40 years.

Many family events and holidays were held at their home and the lake house which they so enjoyed for many years. Multiple generations learned to waterski there after watching Grandma Faye “Fly over the water” always with a big grin on her face. Another favorite pastime of hers was bowling which she enjoyed right up to her passing. Faye and Tom attended a multitude of family member events including school performances, birthday parties, holiday gatherings and many weddings. They cherished their children & grandchildren & hated to miss out on anything. Faye and Tom also enjoyed a wide variety of travel over their 43 years of marriage.

Faye was very proud of her family and cherished her husband Tom, daughter, Lori J. (Joe Voss) Fredrickson of Indianola, IA, son, Daniel C. (Lek) Crouse of Black Hawk, SD; step son, Thomas (Nancy Chang) Carey of Rockford, IL, step daughter, Katie (Dean) Colony of North Liberty, Iowa; eleven grandchildren, Jennifer (Jason) Burtz, Lindsey (Roy) Ulrich, Jamie (Robert) Thomas, Holli (Scott) Duncan, Andrew Carey, Beau Kuhrt, Olivia Kuhrt, Megan Colony, Eric Colony, and Alison Colony, 15 great-grandchildren, & many nieces & nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers, Carlton Spindler and Dr. William E. Spindler, and her grandson, Josiah D. Crouse.
