Fannie Mae Turney Sykes, who was affectionately known as “Faye” was born in Somerville, Alabama on January 12, 1928 to the parentage of Maxie and Eddie Bell Graham Turney. She departed this life on Wednesday, October 3, 2012, at the River City Care and Rehabilitation Center. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Leo Sykes; her sister, Bernice Cowley, brother, Mac Authur Turney, grandson Brandon Sykes, niece, Evelyn Ellison and nephew, Don Timmons.
Mrs. Sykes accepted Christ at an early age. She was a member of King’s Memorial United Methodist Church and served faithfully in the following ministries: Chairperson, The Pastor-Staff-Parish Relations Committee; The Administrative Board; The Council On Ministries; The Church Anniversary and Homecoming Committee; and, The Hattie Taylor Circle. A ministry that she served with commitment and great love throughout her Christian Journey was the Usher Board. For “Faye”, serving as an usher was a great example of Christian Hospitality and she had no equal in this ministry.
Mrs. Sykes attended school in Morgan County School System. She was a retired employee of Baker Industries. She was a former member of R. E. Nelms Elks Lodge, the NAACP, Alabama Democratic Conference and the Semper Fidelis Social Club.
She leaves to cherish her loving memory: her children, Bobbie Bradley, Decatur, Billy Turney (Ella), Milwaukee, WI, Leo Sykes Jr., Decatur, Sandra Woods (Eddie), Athens, Sylvia Swoopes, Frederick Wade Sykes both of Decatur, Timothy S. Sykes (Burnice), Norfork, VA and Cathy Porter of Decatur; sisters, Elizabeth Black (Rev. Equator), Decatur, Maxie M. Chatman, Decatur, Lula J. Turney and Ruth Stevenson of Milwaukee, WI; brother, Joe B. Turney, Milwaukee, WI; sister-in-law, Betty Turney, Decatur; special niece, Katie Garner, Hillsboro; special nephews, Major Thomas, Queens, NY and Bill Sykes Jr., Huntsville; 19 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, special neighbors, Burnice Nell Echols, Cedric Gordon and Emma Ruth Jones, a host of nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.
