Our beloved mother, Fani Katsoufis, passed away on Sunday, April 25th, 2021, after a brief fight with stomach cancer, having already survived Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma several years prior.
She was born in 1939 in a small coastal town off of western Peloponnese, Greece. She was the eldest of three siblings, with sister, Kostoula and brother Lambros. Tragedy befell her family when she lost her father during the Greek Civil War at eight years of age. Her mother soon remarried, and their family grew with her half-brother, Nikos, and half-sister, Kiki. Through her adolescence, Fani helped raise her younger siblings during harsh times and when means were limited.
In her twenties, she moved to Athens and trained as a nurse. She met and married her husband of almost 50 years, Paris, a cargo ship captain. Together, they traveled the world, first aboard the vessels under his command and later when starting their family. They relocated from Greece to Japan and finally homesteaded in Miami, Florida.
In her adopted country, she lived out her dream of growing and providing for a family of her own – a family where she would never let her two sons, George and Lambros, want for love or food or protection. She was a mother who taught her sons by example to care for others in need, to have an open heart and mind, to love their partners unconditionally, and to be good men. This devotion extended to her daughters-in-law Chryso and Effie, and her affection to her four grandchildren, Zoe, Aleko, Paris, and Ioannis, was limitless.
The joys of her grandchildren helped bolster her spirit with the sudden loss of her husband nearly four years ago. This love for her family helped her through the hard times and never waned even until her final days. She passed away with her loving family and friends by her side, indebted and endowed with her lifelong gift.
