E. Lee Handley, 86, of Anderson, passed away on September 7, 2014, at his residence. Lee was born in Anderson on August 23, 1928, having spent most of his life here and graduated from Anderson High School class of 1946, where he was active for many years in class affairs.
He attended the United States Military Academy at West Point, NY as a member of the class of 1950. He served in various Reserve and Indiana National Guard programs from 1950 to 1962, retiring as 1st Lieutenant and Senior Aide to the Commanding General of the 38th Infantry Division. He graduated from General Motors Institute (Kettering University) in 1951. He was employed at Delco Remy Division of General Motors for 36 years retiring in 1983 as Superintendent of Material Control. He received a Master’s Degree from Ball State University in 1963, and his Law Degree from Indiana University in Indianapolis in 1985. He had practiced law locally, serving as Deputy City Attorney in 1986 and 1987, limiting his private practice to matters of the elderly until the time of his retirement in 2004. Lee was active in the affairs of the Christian Center, having served as Chairman of the Board. He was also active as an ESOL tutor of Asiatics in the area. He was a member of The First Church of the Nazarene. Other previous memberships during his lifetime included the Gideon’s, the Madison County Mental Health Association, the New Horizon Maternity Home, the Area 6 Counsel on Aging, the Visiting Nurse Association, The Madison County Literacy Coalition (ESOL Division), and the County and State Bar Associations.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Sue Anne (Harmon) Handley, and by three daughters, Ms. Diana Handley of Pendleton, Mrs. Jane Sullivan of Kokomo, and Mrs. Martha Lofton of Columbus, OH. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, his sister, Mrs. Roberta (Bobby Jo) Greenwalt, Brother Edwin Richard Handley, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Everett and Olive Handley, a brother Eric Neil Handley and sister Phyllis Handley.
