Evelyn McRae, June 9, 1952 – April 26, 2018.
Evelyn Bassett McRae was born in Butler, Alabama on June 9, 1952 to Elijah and Katherine Walker Bassett. Residing in Salado, Texas, she passed away on April 26, 2018 at the age of 65.
Evelyn grew up in Detroit, Michigan with seven siblings, where her father had an upholstery business. She later went to the University of Detroit where she received a two year degree as a Dental Hygienist. She met her husband Robert in High School and they married after he joined the U.S. Navy and they started their adventure.
Evelyn was always very energetic and full of ideas, an avid reader and true to her faith. She was her church secretary when she married Robert and they had three children, one girl Colette and twin boys, Robby and Justin. The twins were born in Naples, Italy. She was a crafter, a quilter and reader. Her faith propelled and motivated her contently. She studied at the Colson Center for Christian Worldview and was a Colson Fellow. She was employed by Sprint Relay Texas for 27 years as an operations supervisor, and conducted outreach for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing and she knew sign language.
She was well loved by her Relay Family. She was a Sunday School teacher and also worked in the ministry of the nursing home as well. She was very humbled when people praised her for her knowledge. But most of all, she was a loving wife, mother and grandmother, who loved her family and showed her compassion and love to everyone she came into contact. She and her husband were equally yoked and had the Blessings of God on their lives, living in harmony and love. Evelyn made the most beautiful quilts and would not sell them but would give them as gifts of love to the recipients.
Evelyn had health issues and although in the hospital for the last several months, her loving spirit was ever present. She always had a smile for everyone who entered her room and radiated the Lord’s presence about her. Her wish was to just go home to the house she picked for retirement. But, the Lord had a better home for her which was ready.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers, Bernard and Fredrick Bassett. She is survived by her devoted husband of 46 years, Robert McRae, her daughter Colette Alyse Greene and son in law Brian Keith Greene, son Robert (Robby) McRae and daughter in law Jessica Mercado McRae and son Justin Todd McRae and daughter in law Tanya Scott McRae, and seven grandchildren, Galyn, Natalia, Veronica, Preston James, Justyce, Aiden and Joshua and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.
