Evelyn Joan Baker, 82, of Galesburg passed away on Tuesday, October 5, 2021 at Marigold Health Care and Rehab, Galesburg.

Evelyn was born on March 27, 1939 in Birmingham, IA, the daughter of Doyle J. and Mary B. (Williams) Philips. She married Charles A. Baker on December 21, 1957 in Galesburg. Charles preceded her in death on March 28, 2007. Evelyn is survived by a son, Michael (Dawn) Baker of Monmouth, IL; a daughter, Bonita (Kenny) Mika of Fort Madison, IA; 19 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild. She is also survived by one brother, Alan (Betty) Philips of Texas; and two sisters, Marilyn “Midge” (Max) Breckenridge of Florida and Linda (Bill) Briggs of Iowa. Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 49 years; a son, Stephen Bryant Baker; two step-sons, Richard Baker and Steven Baker; and two sisters, Rosalie Heminger and Sherry Evans.

She graduated from Carl Sandburg College with her associates degree in law enforcement. Evelyn was the first female terminal manager to work at Jones Motor Company. She also worked as a postal worker at USPS for 27 years, retiring in 2009. Evelyn was a member and past president of the American Legion Auxiliary and a member of the VFW. She was also in the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, the Galesburg Womans Club, and was a co-founder of Knox County Teen Court. Evelyn liked crocheting, reading, and singing in Sweet Adelines Choir and a barbershop quartet.
