Mrs. Henderson peacefully passed away at her residence.

Mary Frances Mayo, affectionately known as “Evelyn” by family and friends, was born September 23, 1915 in Ballsville, Virginia. She was the youngest of eleven children born to loving parents, William Talley Mayo and Virginia Robinson Mayo. Evelyn was baptized at a young age at the Mt.

Several years after school, Evelyn moved to Glen Allen, Virginia, where she resided for a short time with her sister, Mable. From there she moved to New York City and lived with her sister, Mattie, where she worked various jobs.

For many years, Evelyn served her community by working at the local voting polls. She was always adamant about education. In 1982, she attended Educational Cultural Complex (ECC) and earned her high school diploma, where she was selected as Valedictorian for her class at the proud age of sixty-eight. She gave a rousing talk of the importance of continuing one’s education with emphasis on age not being a factor. She always encouraged her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren to continue their education, to encourage others along the way, to never close their minds to learning keeping God in the forefront of everything that did. Two of her favorite sayings were: “His will be done” and “This too shall pass”.

Evelyn made many friends and acquaintances during her extensive national and international travels with her husband, her children, other family and friends. But with all this, her family was always the most important part of her life and she loved them all unconditionally and they dearly loved her.

She was preceded in death by her loving and devoted husband of forty-three years, Roy Henderson; two daughters, Elaine Henderson and Carol Eduok; her grandson, Rodney Eugene Johnson and all of her siblings.

On Friday, March 1, 2013 Evelyn, at the age of ninety-seven, departed this life peacefully at her home surrounded by family and friends. To our dear Evelyn we say thank you, well done ye good and faithful servant!

She leaves to celebrate her life and homegoing, her daughters, Barbara Pinto and Mariama Kata; seven grandchildren, Mark and Christine Eduok, Lisa Johnson, Joseph Johnson (Melinda), Pamela Jackson (Tim), John Terrell (Abigail) Torrey Farahbakhsh (Bejan), nineteen great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
