Our beloved matriarch, sister, aunt and friend Evelyn Edmondson was born in the district of Priory, St. Ann, Jamaica, on March 30, 1936, to parents Constance Grant and Zephaniah Mckoy. The seventh child of a family of ten children, she was the youngest girl; affectionately called “Sister Evelyn” by her siblings and relatives. Evelyn spent most of her young adult life in Port Maria, St. Mary before emigrating to Manchester, England, in the late 50s. After a few years living in Manchester, she emigrated to the place that would eventually become her home—New York City.
Evelyn was a kind, soft-spoken woman who loved God and her family. She was the glue that connected the family together and the first point of contact for all the good and bad news that occurred during life. Often traveling between New York, Jamaica and Manchester, England, Evelyn never hesitated to help or accommodate family members in need, even if her sons had to share a bedroom and she never expected or accepted anything in return. She would always say, “you need to save up to go on your own”—a testament to her selflessness and generosity which knew little limit. A devoted daughter, Evelyn supported and cared for her parents before they died and took up the mantle as a leader in the family long after their deaths.
Evelyn worked at Downstate Medical Center as a dietary aide and after 34 years of service, retired at the age of 68. Over the years, she gained many friends from her work and church family, including her favorite traveling companion Bailey.
Sister Evelyn was a dedicated mother whose love for her children was immeasurable.
