Evelyn Iola (Burke) Stender, 93, of Durham, wife of the late Maynard R. Stender, passed away on Sunday, May 17th at Middlesex Hospital. Born in Madison, she was the daughter of the late Milton and Dorothy (Kuever) Burke. Evelyn lived in Durham most of her life, was an avid gardener, loved animals and watching horse pulls.
She worked at Lake Grove School in Durham for over thirty-five years in the kitchen where the kids all called her Gram and the school dedicated the cafeteria to her as the Stender Hall. She loved serving all the kids. Evelyn was a very giving person who was affectionately known as Mom and Gram to all. Evelyn is survived by two sons, Donald R. Stender of Killingworth and Thomas W. Stender of Wallingford; a daughter, Linda S. Negrich and her husband, John of Durham; six grandchildren, John P. Negrich, Jr., Loreen Negrich, April Antonowicz, Brandy Traczyk, Jeff Stender and Nicole Sobol and six great grandchildren, Cassie, Ashtin, Caleb, Tyler, Evelyn and Bernard “Jack”.
